The ONLY Driving Instructor to offer a private online progress report

Licence and general Information
You must be 17 years old to drive a motor vehicle on a public highway.
If your have a disability you are able to drive at 16 years old.
Before you can learn to drive on a public road you must obtain a Driving Licence.
This can be done by going to a post office and ask for a Driving Licence application form.
You will also need to get 2 passport type photo's, these will need to be signed and dated by the person who fills in the section on the licence.
It generally takes about 10 working days for your Licence to arrive.

You can apply for your licence BEFORE you are 17 years old, but it will not start until your birthday.

Your licence will be in two parts, (A paper card part similar to a credit card, and a A4 sheet) both parts are important and you will need both parts to take your test, and if you ever get asked to produce your Licence to a police station.

Learning to Drive

Your next step is to choose some form of tuition, Obviously I would strongly recommend a Qualified Driving Instructor.
You can if you wish get your parents, a relative, or a friend to teach you, but consider this.
  • They must have held a licence for 3 years in the category that they are teaching.
  • If they have been driving for years, do they really know what is expected in todays driving test.
  • When was the last time THEY actually read the highway code, of which a good percent is now law.
  • You must have the insurance to cover YOU in what ever vehicle you are learning in.
I would recommend a Qualified Driving Instructor all the time. this way you know you are being trained correctly.
And then if neccessary you could have your friends and family help practice what you are being taught.

Instructors and schools

Here are just a few points to consider when choosing an instructor.
  • Make sure you choose an instructor that works or lives local to you, or where you want to train from.
  • If somebody recommended you to a driving school, get the instructors actual name and ask for HIM / HER
  • Make sure your instructor is FULLY qualified, they will have a GREEN badge in the window with their photo on it.
  • If their badge is PINK, this means they are a trainee instructor, and have not qualified the teaching part of the ADI training.
  • All driving instructors are self employed, so a big named school does not mean you will get a good instructor
  • Price does not make a difference, the quality of instruction makes the difference

If your not in the Derby area and haven't chosen me

Remember that once you are with an instructor you have to get on with them, if you dislike them for any reason
i.e. They SHOUT, unreliable, late, car sharing, or you just don't jell, then change, it is YOUR money, so YOUR choice.
Any driving instructor who shouts at you should not be in the trade, so just change them the first time they do it.

Popular questions I've been asked

Question:- How many lessons will i need
Answer:- No honest driving instructor can answer that question, it is based upon your individual learning ability.

Question:- What is your pass rate
Answer:- See Here

Question:- Do I take my test in this car
Answer:- Yes, all your training and your final test is taken in my car

Question:- Do I have to answer questions on the actual driving test
Answer:- You do, but not theory related, they are on Show me - Tell-me, See Here for more info, (You only get asked 2 questions)

Question:- Who gets the points if a pupil goes through a speed camera
Answer:- The pupil, although a good instructor would not allow this to happen. ( It never has to me)

Two Year Probational Period

Remember, once you have passed your test you are on a 2 year probation period.
If you get six points through speeding or any other motoring offence within 2 years you licence will be revoked.
This means you will have to
  • Re-apply for a provisional licence
  • Re-take your theory test
  • Re-take your driving test
If you get 6 points on your licence and you have not passed your test yet, Your provisional licence will not be revoked.
You may still take the test as normal, BUT, if you get 1 more point your full licence WILL be revoked.
